We compared the same dog food across 6 stores. The price difference is insane.

Two dogs exploring a creek

Here's something most dog owners don't realize: the exact same bag of dog food — same brand, same formula, same weight — can cost 25 to 40 percent more at one retailer compared to another. Not a different product. Not a different size. The same physical bag.

We wanted to see how big the gap really is. So we picked three of the most popular premium dog food products in the U.S. and checked the price at six major retailers: Chewy, Amazon, Walmart, PetSmart, Petco, and Costco.

The results were more dramatic than we expected.

Product 1: Blue Buffalo Wilderness Adult Salmon (24 lb)

Blue Buffalo Wilderness is one of the most popular grain-free lines in the country. The 24-lb salmon recipe for adult dogs is a staple for owners who want a high-protein, grain-free option.

PetSmart $67.99
Petco $67.99
Amazon $59.98
Walmart $54.48
Chewy $48.99
Difference $19.00 (28%)

That's a $19 difference between the cheapest and most expensive option. If you buy this food monthly, that's $228 per year you might be overpaying — for the exact same product sitting in the exact same type of bag.

Product 2: Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon (30 lb)

Purina Pro Plan is the veterinarian-recommended brand that millions of dog owners buy on repeat. The sensitive stomach formula is particularly popular for dogs with digestive issues.

Petco $74.98
PetSmart $72.98
Amazon $66.68
Walmart $62.48
Chewy $61.98
Difference $13.00 (17%)

Chewy and Walmart are within fifty cents of each other here. The pet specialty stores are charging $11–13 more for the same bag. If you're buying from PetSmart or Petco out of convenience, you're paying a meaningful premium for it.

Product 3: Taste of the Wild High Prairie (28 lb)

Taste of the Wild is a fan favorite in the premium-but-not-ultra-premium space. The High Prairie recipe with bison and roasted venison is their best seller.

Petco $56.99
PetSmart $54.99
Amazon $49.98
Chewy $44.98
Tractor Supply $43.99
Difference $13.00 (23%)

Tractor Supply quietly has some of the best prices on brands like Taste of the Wild — and most dog owners don't think to check there. It's not just a farm store. They ship nationally and carry a solid selection of premium pet food.

Why prices vary this much

Pet specialty retailers like PetSmart and Petco have higher operating costs — physical stores, staff, in-store experiences — and they price accordingly. Online-first retailers like Chewy can undercut on price because their fulfillment model is built differently. Amazon's prices fluctuate constantly based on demand and third-party seller competition. Walmart leverages its massive purchasing power to negotiate lower wholesale costs.

None of this is a secret. But most dog owners don't have time to open five apps every time they need to reorder food. So they default to wherever they bought it last time — which is often not the cheapest option.

What this means for your wallet

If you're spending $100–200 per month on dog food and supplies (which is normal for owners of medium-to-large breeds on premium diets), a 20–30% price difference adds up fast. We're talking $240–720 per year in potential savings, just by buying the same products from a different retailer.

The catch is that the cheapest retailer changes. Chewy might have the best price this week, but Amazon might undercut them next month. Walmart runs promotions. Tractor Supply adjusts seasonally. Keeping track of all of this manually is a full-time job that nobody signed up for.

That's exactly the problem Luca solves. Every week, Luca checks every retailer, compares every price, and builds a cart that's automatically optimized for the lowest total cost. You don't need to open five apps. You open one, and the work is already done.

Stop overpaying for dog food.
